There is much that you can do to protect yourself when you ride. You’ll find many helpful recommendations throughout this manual. The followmg are a few that we consider most important. Always Wear a Helmet It’s a proven fact: Helmets signilicantly reduce the number and severity of head injuries. 80 always wear an approved motorcycle helmet and make sure your passenger does the same. We also recommend that you wear eye protection. sturdy boots. gloves and other protective gear [page 2). Make VoursetI Easy to See Some drivers do not see scooters because they are not looking for them. To make yourself more visible. wear bright reflective clothing. position yourself so other drivers can see you. signal belore turning or changing lanes. and use your horn when it will help others notice you. Ride Within Vour Limits Pushing the limits is another major cause of scooter accidents. Never ride beyond your personal abilities or laster than conditions warrant. Remember that alcohol. drugs. fatigue and inattention can signilicantly reduce your ability to make good judgements and ride safely. Don’t Drink and Ride Alcohol and ridlng don‘t mix. Even one drink can reduce your ability to respond to changing condllions, and your reaction time gets worse with every additional dllnk. So don't drink and ride, and don’t let your friends drink and ride either. Keep Vour Bike in Sate Conditions For safe riding. ll's important to inspect your scooter before every ride and perform all recommended maintenance. Never exceed load limits and only use accessories that have been approved by Honda for this Scooter. See page 5 for more details. PROTECTIVE APPAREL For your safety, we strongly recommend that you always wear an approved motorcycle helmet, eye protection, boots, gloves, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt or jacket whenever you ride. Although complete protection is not possible, wearing proper gear can reduce the chance of inlury when you ride. Following are suggestions to help you choose proper gear. A WARNING Not wearing a helmet increases the chance of senous injury or death in a crash. Be sure you and your passenger always wear a helmet. eye protection and other protective apparel when you ride. Helmets and Eye Protection Your helmet is your most important piece of riding gear because it offers the best protection against head injuries. A helmet should lit your head comfortably and securely. A bright-coloured helmet can make you more noticeable in lratlic, as can reflective strips. An open-race helmet offers some protection. but a full-face helmet oflers more. Always wear a face shield or goggles to protect your eyes and help your Vision. Additional Riding Gear in addition to a helmet and eye protection. we also recommend: - Sturdy boots with non-slip soles to help protect your feet and ankles. - Leather gloves to keep your hands warm and help prevent blisters. cuts. burns and bruises. - A motorcycle riding suit or Jacket for comforl as well as protection. Bright- coloured and reflective clothing can help make you more noticeable in traffic. Be sure to avoid loose clothes that could get caughl on any parl of your scooter. ALWAYS wear a helme‘. You should also wear a lace shwe‘d or gogg‘es. Wear bngm Shoes shou‘d be closerfining. have \ow heels and offer ankle pro‘ecuon. Use a pin spanner (2) io adiust the rear shock. Aiways adjusl the shock absorber position in seduenee (1-2-3-4—5 or 5-4-3-2-1). Attempting to adjuste directiy from 1 id 5 or 5 to 1 may damage the schock absorber. Posilion: 1 to 2 is for light loads and smooth road conditions. Posilions 4 to 5 increase spring preload for a sliffer rear suspension. and can be used when the scooler is heawiy loaded. Be certain is adjust both shock absorbers to the same position. m Shock absorber Standard posmon. 3 (2) pin spanner 26 BRAKES Combined Brake System (CBS) This scooter is equlpped wlth a Combined Brake Sysiem. Operating the rear brake lever applies the rear brake and a portion oi lhe front brake. For lull braklng effectiveness, use both lhe from and rear brake lever simulianeously, as you would wllh a conventional scooter braking system. As vviih a conventional scooter braking system. excessively hard applicaiion of the brake controls may cause wheel lock. reducing control oi the scooier. For normal braking, apply com the from and rear brake lever to maich your road speeo. For maximum braking, close lhe lhrottle and firmly apply lhe from and rear brake lever. 27 Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) (suaooA/An) This model is also equipped with an AnIHock Brake System (ABS) designed lo help prevent wheel lock up during hard braklng on uneven or other poor surfaces while running slraight. Although lhe wheel may not lock up - if you are braklng too hard in a turn the scooter can slill lose traction, causing a loss of confrol. In cerlain conditions, on uneven surfaces or loose lerrain a scooler with ABS may have a longer stopping distance than a scooter without ABS. The ABS syslem cannot compensate for road condilions. errors of iudgement, or improper use of the brakes. lt is always the responsibility of lhe rider to adopt a suilable road speed in relalion lo wealher conditions. the road surface, and the traffic levels, while leaving an ample margin of safely. The ABS system is Seif—regulahng and always actfve. 23 -The ABs system may be engaged by sudden upward or downward level differences in the road surface. Make sure you observe the prescriptions concerning tyres (page 39). The ABS computer acts on the basis of the comparative speeds of lhe front and rear wheel. The use of non»approved tyres can affect the speed of the wheels and supply confusing information to the ABS computer. The ABS system is not active al low speed (around 10 km/h (6 mph) or slower). The ABS syslem will not work if the battery is discharged. ABS Indicator Light (SHGDOA/AR) This indicator normally illuminates when the ignition switch is set to ON and is exlingul- shed when the scooter is ridden at a speed of more than 10 km/h (6 mph) .If there is a pro- blem with the ABS system. this light flashes and remains on. When the indicator light is illuminated the ABS system is not operative. If the ABS indicator illuminates while travelling. stop the scooter in a safe place and switch ofl the engine. Fletum the ignition switch to ON. The indicator should illuminate and then sWitoh off after the scooter has been ridden at a speed of more than 10 km/h (6 mph). it the indicator fails to switch off, this means the ABS system is not working. although the normal braking system will continue to work and supply the normal stopping power. in these conditions however the system should be checked over by an authorized Honda dealer as soon as possible. The ABS indicator may illuminate it the rear wheel is driven at high speed for more than 30 seconds when the scooter is upright on the stand. This reaction is perfectly normal. Set the ignition switch to OFF and then return it to ON. The indicator light should illuminate and then switch off alter the scooter has been ridden at a speed of more than 30 km/h (19 mph). 29 Inspection Both the front and rear brakes are the hydraulic disc types. As the brake pads wear. the brake lluid level drops. There are no adjustments to periorm. but fluid level and pad wear must be inspected periodically. The system must be inspected frequenlly to ensure there are no fluid leaks. If the control lever free travel becomes excessive. and the brake pads are not worn beyond the recommended limit (page 104- 105). there is probably air in the brake system and it must be bled. See your Honda dealer for this service. Front Brake Fluid Level With the scooter in an upright position. check the fluid level. It should be above the LOWER level mark (1). If the level is at or below the LOWER level mark (1). check the brake pads for wear (page 104-105). 30 Worn pads must be replaced. If the pads are not worn. have your brake system inspected for leaks. The recommended brake fluid is Honda DOT 4 brake lluid from a sealed container. or an equivalent. Front (I) LOWER level mark Rear Brake Fluid Level With the scooter in an uprighl posilion. check the fluid level. ll should be above the LOWER level mark (1)- lithe level is at or below the LOWER level mark (1), check the bmke pads for wear (page 104-105). Other cheeks: Make sure there are no fluid leaks. Check ior deterioralion or omcks in lhe hoses and iiitings. Rear (I) LOWER level mark 31 CDOLANT Coolant recommendation The owner must properly maintain the coolant to prevent lreezing, overheating and corrosion. Use only high quality ethylene glycol antifreeze containing corrosion protection inhipitors specifically recommended for use in aluminum engines. (SEE ANTIFREEZE CONTAINER LABEL). Use only low-mineral drlnking water or distilled water as a pan of the antifreeze solution. Water that is high in mineral content or salt may be harmful to the aluminum engine. Using coolant vvith silicate lnhlbilors may cause premature wear ol water pump seals or blockage of radiator passages. Using tap water may cause engine damage. 32 The factory provides a 50/50 solution of antifreeze and distilled water in this scooter. This coolant solution is recommended for most operating temperatures and provides good corrosion protection. A higher concentration of antifreeze decreases the cooling system performance and is recommended only when additional protection against lreezing is needed. A concentration of less than 40/60 (40% antifreeze) will not provide proper corrosion protection. During freezing temperatures. check the cooling system lrequently and add higher concentrations ol antifreeze (up to a maximum of 60% antifreeze) if required. Inspection The reserve tank is located underneath, on the left hand side ol the lootrest. Check the level of coolant in the reserve tank (1) when the engine is at normal operating temperature and the scooter is in a vertical position. It the coolant level is under the Lower level mark (2) proceed as loltovvs: 1 . Ftemove the rootrest cover (page 34) 2. Pull out the coolant tank compartment cover (page 34) 3. Remove the reserve tank cap (page 34) and add coolant mix until the “UPPER" level mark (a) is reached. Always add coolant to the reserve tank. Do not attempt to add coolant by removing the radiator cap. If the reserve tank is empty. or it coolant loss is excessive. check for leaks and see your Honda dealer for repair. - Be sure to turn the ignition switch OFF belore adding the coolant. The following pages give more detailed information on how and when to check your air pressure, how to inspeci your tyres for damage and what io do when your tyres need lo be repaired or replaced. A WARNING Using iyres that are excessively worn or improperly inflated can cause a crash in which you can be seriously hurt or killed. Follow all insiructions in this owner’s manual regarding tyre inflation and maintenance. Air pressure Keeping your tyres properly inflated provides the best combination of handling. tread lile and riding comlori. Generally. underinllated tyres wear unevenly, adversely affect handling and are more likely io lail from being overheaied. Overinflaied iyres make your scooter ride more harshly, are more prone to damage from road hazards and wear unevenly. We recommend ihat you visually check your tyres before every ride and use a gauge to measure air pressure ai least once a month or anytime you think the tyres might be low. Tubeless tyres have some sell-sealing ability if they are punctured. However because leakage is olien very slow, you should look closely for punctures whenever a lyre is not lully inflaied. 39 Always check air pressure when your tyres are “cold" — when the scooter has been parked for at least three hours. If you check air pressure when your tyres are “warm" — when the scooter has been ridden for even a few miles — the readings will be higher than if the tyres were “cold". This is normal. 50 do nol let air DUI of the lyres to match the recommended cold air pressures given below. If you do. the tyres will be undennilated. The recommended "cold" tyre pressures are: kl=a (kgf/cm2,psi) Driver Front 200 12.00, 29) only Rear 225 12.25, 33) Driver and Front 200 12.00, 29) one passenger Rear 225 12.25, 33) 40 Inspection Whenever you check the tyre pressures. you should also examine the lyre treads and sidewalls for wear, damage. and foreign oblecls: Look for: - Bumps or bulges in the side oi the tyre or the tread. Replace the lyre if you find any bumps or bulges. - Cuts. splits or cracks in the tyre. Replace the lyre if you can see fabric or cord. Excessive tread wear. As dlscussed below. a lyre lhal is repaired, eilher lemporarily or permanently will have lower speed and performance limils than a new lyre. A temporary repair, such as an exlernal lubeless lyre plug may not be sale for normal speeds and riding condillons. If a lemporanr or emergency repair is made to a lyre, you should ride slowly and caullously lo a dealer and have the lyre replaced. If possible you should nol carry a passenger or cargo until a new lyre is inslalled. 42 Even if a lyre is professlorlally repaired with a permanenl internal palch plug, it will not be as good as a new lyre. Vou should nol exceed 80 km/h (50 mph) ror lhe first 24 hours, or 130 km/h (80 mph) al any lime thereafter. In addllion you may not be able to safely cany as much weight as with a new lyre. Therefore. we strongly recommend thal you replace a damaged tyre. ll you choose lo have the lyre repaired, be sure lhe wheel is balanced belore you ride. Tyre replacement The iyres that came on your scooter were designed io match the perlormance capabiliiies of your scooter and provide the besi combination of handling, braking, durability and comiori. A WARNING lnsialling improper tyres on your scooter can atiect handling and siability. This can cause a crash in which you can be seriously hurt or killed.
