In fact , however , the ATV is inherently unstable in a number
of ways which are described in greater detail in the next
section .
d . These instabilities cause accidents . The operating manuals
describe some of the possible accidents , and suggest that they can be avoided by understanding the mechanics of the
vehicle , and by developing certain skills in riding it .
In fact , however , the necessary manipulative skills are
extremely complex , and , in my opinion , not easily acquired
by the average rider .
e . Furthermore , in the actual use of the vehicles over rough
terrain , the unexpected encounter with a dangerous situation
requires a split - second instinctive response , which is beyond
the ability of all but a very few talented individuals .
f . Finally , as will be seen , the nature of the instabilities
is such that the vehicle will follow the trajectory of the
thrown rider , and land on top of him or her , seriously
aggravating the accident result .
