FOUR - WHEELED ATV VEHICLES

American Honda Motor Company , Inc , introduced the

four - wheeled ATV known as the Fourtrax in 1984 .

There were no

safety reasons involved in the decision to market the four wheeled ATV . Rather it reflected a market demand , and a preference of some customers to use the four - wheel version originally introduced into the market by the Suzuki Company .

The Fourtrax vehicle was originally developed and intended to be used mainly in the utility market where its weight

m

and size seemed to provide some advantages . Recently , there is a growing recreational and sports use , also .

In Honda ' s opinion , four - wheeled vehicles are not more stable than the three - wheeled vehicle , but each type vehicle has

its own characteristics . First , it must be determined whether

one is addressing static or dynamic stability , in that a general

rule of static stability is that the more wheels present on a

vehicle , the more static stability it possesses . An example would be that a motorcycle has less static stability , because of two wheels , than an ATC has because of its three wheels .

However , it is assumed that the question directed by Chairman

Barnard addresses dynamic stability , since the three - and four

wheeled ATV vehicles , as a practical matter , possess about the

same or similar static stability .
