Perhaps the most significant , and certainly the most recognizable , feature or characteristic of the ATV is the large , fat , flotation type tire which provides the key to the ATV ' S remarkable versatility . With its large " footprint " and high traction capabilities , this tire enables the ATV to operate in soft terrains such as mud , or over sand and snow , with unique mobility . Combined with the low tire inflation pressure and the light weight of the vehicle , the large tire footprint facilitates travel over fragile terrain with minimal soil impact . At the same time , the tires must be able to accomodate far less for giving terrains , such as rocks and hard surfaces .

These essential characteristics of a large size , low pressure tire that can " float " over soft surfaces contribute greatly to what the ATV can do - - 1 . e . , go many places where few , if any , other vehicles can go .
